However, Hoover added that the cast and crew were kind and they portrayed their home favorably, even with the jabs of humor strung throughout the episode. Hoover said the family was shocked when they found out that they had made it past the first round of the show.
One of those shows was "Ugliest House in America," which Hoover applied for, despite thinking her home was more dated than "ugly." "When we do have gatherings of people, and we've had 30 or 40 people at a time, one of the first places they tend to go is the sunken part of the living room," Hoover said, adding that it makes the large room "much comfier."Ī couple of months after the family purchased their house, their realtor was contacted by a representative for HGTV who was scouting for houses to feature on the network. Hoover's favorite quirk though is a sunken coach in the middle of the living room, which can sit up to 15 people comfortably. The home also boasts a number of other quirks including a dining room converted into a bedroom, broken and outdated appliances, textured wallpaper and a floor-to-ceiling stone wall in the middle of the home. Echoes of that past could be found all around the house including the zebra fur-lined light switches and bar and discolored wall spaces where "trophies" were hung up. "Despite the fact that it was really dated and nothing had been touched in a really long time, it kind of checked all of our boxes," Hoover said about why they bought it.
The property also doubles as a horse rescue, which prompted host of "Ugliest House in America," Retta ("Parks and Recreation," "Good Girls"), to dub it the “Temple of Equus." The couple purchased their home in September of 2022 and reside there with their two daughters and Hoover's parents. Instead, a house tucked into the northeast corner of Connecticut took home the honor of being the "ugliest house in the Northeast."Ĭory Hoover, and her husband, Jim, own the house in Putnam that moved onto the next round of the show.
